Biology Thursday seminar continues on zoom on thu 16th Nov, 12:15, with Dr. Cecilia di Bernardi from Grimsö Wildlife Research Station, Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences on "Wolf feeding ecology in a multi-ungulate system" Predation patterns by large carnivores are influenced by a combination of physical, behavioral, and environmental factors. With the recolonization of these apex predators, there is a need to better understand carnivores' ecology in human dominated landscapes. Data on individual traits of large carnivores are difficult to retrieve and even more to associate with individual feeding behavior. Alongside cluster checks of GPS-collared wolves, the growing field of faecal DNA-based diet analysis in combination with individual genotyping has the potential to increase the feasibility of large-scale analyses of food use related to individual predator traits. In this research, the development and empirical validation of a molecular method for prey DNA detection was followed by the analysis of intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting feeding ecology of wolves in Sweden. The method used nanofluidic array technology and a set of 80 multiple species-specific markers to detect DNA of 17 target prey from wolf scats. By taking advantage of the long-term wolf monitoring, we showed that wolf feeding patterns (i.e. prey use with DNA-data and extent of scavenging with GPS-data) were affected by social status, sex, and level of inbreeding. These innovative patterns underline the relevance of considering predator individual traits when studying carnivore feeding ecology. Hei, tiedoksi opiskelijoille lähettämäni valmistumisviesti. Muistutuksena Pepin arviointipäivämäärien laittamisesta: Suorituspäivämääräksi Peppiin merkitään aina tenttipäivä, raportin palautuspäivä yms., ei tarkastuspäivä. Eli jos olette jo lomilla siinä vaiheessa kun opiskelija tekee examinarium -tenttinsä esim. 22.12., niin riittää että tammikuussa merkitsette suorituksen tuolle päivämäärälle, niin opiskelija voi valmistua joulukuun jaossa. LuK-tutkielman ja gradun hyväksyminen Laturissa on kuitenkin tehtävä aina viimeistään viikkoa ennen kuun vaihdetta (Lumi, Seppo) sen jälkeen kun tarkastajat ovat laittaneet arviointinsa sinne, jotta opiskelija voisi valmistua ko. kuussa (tämä hyväksymispäivämäärä siirtyy Pepin rekisteriin suorituspäivämääräksi). terv. Työn on oltava hyväksyttynä Laturissa marraskuun valmistujilla viimeistään pe 23.11. Samoin loppukuulustelu, kypsyysnäyte yms. kurssit pitää olla hyväksyttyinä ja näkyvissä Pepin rekisterissä viimeistään 23.11. Sopikaa LuK-kypsyysnäytteen tekemisestä ohjaajanne kanssa (essee) ja siitä, että hän ehtii tarkastaa sen ennen yo. päivämäärää. FM-kypsyysnäyte on Laturin tiivistelmä ja se tulee kuntoon samalla kun gradu hyväksytään Laturissa. Koska opetus- ja tutkimushenkilökunnalla on joululoma, niin joulukuun valmistujien täytyy ottaa ao. huomioon. Joulukuussa valmistuvilla pitää olla kaikki suoritukset tehtynä viimeistään viikkoa ennen kuun vaihdetta eli 24.12. Harva graduntarkastaja on kuitenkaan jouluviikon loppupuolella enää töissä, joten gradu ja LuK-tutkielma pitäisi ladata Laturiin viimeistään itsenäisyyspäiväviikon alkupuolella (vko 49). Tarkastajilla on 3 viikkoa aikaa tehdä arviointi Laturiin. Joissain tapauksissa gradun ohjaaja voi sopia lyhyemmän tarkastusajan tarkastajien kanssa, mutta tämä asia on varmistettava hyvissä ajoin. Suosittelen että juttelet graduohjaajasi kanssa heti tästä tilanteesta, että mikä on ehdoton takaraja Laturin suhteen. Hän voi kartoittaa, mikä tarkastajien aikataulu, milloin he pystyvät laittamaan arvionsa Laturiin. Pääsääntö on kuitenkin, että työ on ladattava Laturiin yllä olevana ajankohtana. Koska olen itsekin lomalla, niin joulukuun valmistujien pitää tehdä Pepin Valmistumishakemus viimeistään pe 15.12., jotta ehdin tarkastaa ne. Merkkaan hakemuksille tiedoksi puuttuvat opinnot ja arvioidun suoritusajankohdan, sihteeri tarkastaa tilanteen tammikuun alussa, kun alkaa tehdä todistuksia. The purpose of this survey is to find out how persons who carry out research, support research and work in education would like to be evaluated and what types of skills and expertise should be taken into account in evaluation situations. The data gathered through the survey will be used to support the planning of the Finnish Career Assessment Matrix (FIN-CAM). Dr. Luigi Baciadonna (CNRS - University Paul Sabatier - Toulouse III) on "Multi-sensory individual recognition in African penguin" The ability to uniquely identify individuals is considered a crucial step for the evolution of sociality and it forms the basis of many complex behaviours, such as understanding dominance, allocating adequate parental care, and territory defence. Individual recognition has been found in several animal species. The sensory signals used for this purpose vary widely and include visual, olfactory/chemical, and auditory stimuli. In the first part of the talk, I will present the complex vocal repertoire of the African penguin and how the application of the source-filter model of phonation has made it possible to decode identity cues encoded in the contact calls and ecstatic display calls of this species. Furthermore, I will discuss the evidence for the biological relevance of some vocal cues encoded in the calls of conspecifics, using experimental paradigms from comparative psychology and playback techniques. Although a long tradition of research on penguins has highlighted the importance and efficiency of acoustic communication in extreme environmental conditions and for sociality, there is convincing evidence that other sensory modalities may be equally efficient to identify others. The African penguin, and in general the penguins of the Spheniscus genus, have a phenotypic peculiarity. Approximately 3-5 months after hatching, a pattern of black dots appears on the ventral part of the plumage which remains stable throughout their life despite seasonal moulds. Throughout a battery of tests, we have demonstrated the ability of this species to discriminate their partners based on visual cues alone and preliminary evidence suggests the role of the dot pattern in individual recognition. Finally, I will present experimental evidence to support the ability to mentally represent familiar individuals. Through the expectation violation paradigm, I demonstrated how penguins are faster in observing an unexpected event in which the visual information (viewing a familiar member of the colony disappearing behind a barrier) did not correspond to correct acoustic information (vocalization of a different individual from the one seen leaving). The observed pattern of responses supports the idea that penguins have a rather complex and flexible ability to reliably identify others in their colony. Furthermore, these results challenge the idea that penguins exclusively use acoustic information to identify each other and that the only visual information they rely on is the spatial location of their nest. African penguins are classified as endangered by the IUCN. Understanding their cognitive abilities, so far almost completely unknown, appears particularly useful for raising awareness about their conservation status in the general population.
