Dear colleagues,
Biology Thursday seminar kicks off this week, 12:15 on zoom (link below), with
Ass. Prof. Elina Immonen from the Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University, on
"How to evolve to resolve sexual conflict?"
Abstract: Patterns of genetic variance generated by the largely shared genome of males and females may lead to evolutionary constraints when the sexes are subject to divergent selection. In this talk, I show how evolvable sexual dimorphism is under different forms of sexually divergent selection - both in body size and gene expression - and how the genetic architecture matters.

The current version of the seminar program is up at thursdayseminarbiology.wordpress.com/ - as you can see there are still some empty slots, so I'm very keen to hear your suggestions on who to invite as speakers!
See you in zoom on Thursday,
best wishes,
Heikki

Aihe: VS: Hakemustietokanta / Application database
Hei,
Tähän liittyen, välittäkää tietoa yksiköissänne eteenpäin, että jokaisen haettavan rahoituksen tiedot täytetään ja lähetetään oheisella lomakkeelle:
https://forms.office.com/r/EYv78X8wjH
Näin saamme muodostettua hakemustietokannan tiedekunnan kaikista haetuista rahoituksista. Hakemuskannan raportointi tulee jatkossa osaksi kuukausittaista controlling-raportointia.
Ystävällisin terveisin,
Jouni
Hello,
In connection with this, please pass on the information to your units that the details for every funding application should be filled out and submitted using the following form:
https://forms.office.com/r/EYv78X8wjH
This way, we can create an application database for all funding requests within the faculty. Reporting on the application database will become part of our monthly controlling reporting going forward.
Kind regards,
Jouni

Would you be (or do you know someone else who would be) interested in a PhD position working with headwater streams and climate change induced extreme conditions?
There is a 4-year PhD position open at SLU (https://www.slu.se/en/) as part of a great multidisciplinary reasearch team! 😊
More information in below links, and also from yours truly.
Please share for potential candidates!

Join us in the Home River Bioblitz, a global citizen science event to document animals, plants, and fungi living in and around rivers.
The aim of the Bioblitz? To identify as many species as possible in one day, to show the importance of rivers as hosts of much of the world’s biodiversity!
We will inventory the species along Oulujoki together with nature enthusiasts, biologists, and the help of the iNaturalist App!
Everyone is welcome on Saturday 23/09, starting at 11:00 @ patosilta: https://maps.app.goo.gl/e3GWGodn4vs31t9a8

Dear colleagues,
We have a possibility to organize and host the 20th Eurasian Grassland Conference in Oulu in 2025, however it will make sense if the members of our university research community are interested in this initiative. So, I would like to discuss this point and ask if someone (who has a contract in the University of Oulu at least until the end of 2025) has a wish and motivation to become a member of its local organizing committee. Potentially this conference can be implemented within the Biodiverse Anthropocenes research programme, however many things should be done before the final decision will be accepted. Also, we can invite some other Finnish organizations like Parks and Wildlife Finland (https://www.metsa.fi/en/about-us/organisation/business-units/parkswildlife-…) to become co-organizations. Maybe they will agree to take responsibilities to organize post-conference excursion/s.
The Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (https://edgg.org/home) connects researchers and conservationists interested in Palearctic natural and semi-natural grasslands. The organization holds annual conferences in various locations in Eurasia and North Africa: the last one was in Spain (2022), in this year - Hungary (2023) - https://www.egc2023.hu, the next one - in Italy (2024). Now there is an open question: where will the 20th Eurasian Grassland Conference happen in 2025? So, I think that the University of Oulu might be a perfect candidate for this event with a mid-conference excursion to the Hailuoto island. We could organize this event at the end of June of 2025, because it will be an especially attractive time to show local grasslands, as well as the time of white nights about which many people heard a lot, but never seen.
So, if you are interested in this offer, please let me know. Also, I am ready to answer your questions.
Kind regards,
Mykyta

After pursuing her Ph.D. in Chemistry (2010), she received 6 major grants as Principal Investigator, including the Academy of Finland Fellowship for postdoctoral research in 2013‒2017. She currently leads the Hybrid Solar Cells group (https://research.tuni.fi/hsc/) at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at TAU. Her research interests include developing novel materials, as thin films and nanocrystals, for solar energy applications. Presently, the main emphasis of the research is on halide perovskites and perovskite-inspired materials for solar cells and indoor photovoltaics.
And Dr. Mohammad Alzeer will continue discussing “Geopolymer-based Heterogeneous Catalysts: Potential and Future Prospects”
Mohammad Alzeer joined the Fiber and Particle Engineering Research Unit as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in September 2019. He received his PhD in Chemistry from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in 2017. After his graduation he was appointed Assistant Professor in Chemistry at American University of the Middle East, Kuwait until the appointment of his current position. His research is focused on developing advanced materials for sustainability and environmental protection applications, with particular focus on functional materials for heterogeneous catalysis and energy-related applications, CO2 capture utilisation and sequestration, and sustainability and circular economy.
Join us and get inspired to facilitate wonderful research!
