NordForsk was established in 2005 by the Nordic Council of Ministers for the purpose of strengthening Nordic research. NordForsk seeks to enhance the quality, impact and efficiency of Nordic research cooperation, thereby helping the Nordic region to become a world leader in research and innovation. Arne Flåøyen has been Director of NordForsk since 2018. He is a trained veterinarian with extensive experience as a researcher, research manager and research bureaucrat, including as a national expert in the European Commission. SRC Chair Anu Kaukovirta says that the SRC is preparing to open two six-year research programmes on the new theme. "We find ourselves in the midst of a green transformation. Best wishes, Mathilde van den Berg, Affiliated Doctoral Researcher, Biodiverse Anthropocenes Program 15:00 Start event in the University of Oulu’s Botanical Garden (Science Garden room Exhibition Space) Introduction to the event – Mathilde van den Berg Veera Kinnunen from Environmental humanities and social sciences will acquaint us with food waste fermentation through the bokashi composting method. Last summer she investigated collective efforts of making bokashi and taking care of waste – and the earth, mainly with the permaculture community garden in Rovaniemi. Heikki Helanterä from Evolutionary Biology gives us a presentation about the variation in size and organization in ant societies ranging from territorially aggressive single nest societies to super colonies. He looks at the variation in this fundamental social feature in Formica exsecta both in Southern Finland and in Northern Lapland. Tuuli Matila from Contemporary archaeology horses around at Nazi stables and introduces us to her excavations of last summer done at a WWII site in Oulu. The excavations of the military barracks focused especially on the lodgings of Nazi troops and related structures, like the stables where horses were kept during the war. Jussi Jyväsjarvi from Aquatic ecology introduces us to the question whether land use obscures the effects of habitat heterogeneity on stream biodiversity. He presents two co-related projects from the summer of 2022, which both focus on the effects of peatland restoration in improving the status of habitat-restored streams. Marjo Juola from Archaeology talks to us about her fieldwork trip to a haunting but aesthetically pleasing old factory. This summer’s fieldwork excursion led her to Kajaani Renforsin ranta to photograph, explore, and capture the liminal space of this abandoned place. In this presentation she will explore these images more deeply. 16:15-16:45 - Break (food and beverages) Rishikesh Raut from Environmental engineering circumnavigated Finland by bicycle as a means of drawing attention to local issues of environmental change and biodiversity loss. The expedition trip shows that in our quest for accumulating scientific knowledge, attention must be paid to the mystical, the sublime and the unexplainable. Marko Mutanen, Niina Kiljunen & Marko Prous from Biology give a presentation on last summer’s entomological expedition to Utsjoki, Lapland. Coordinated by the Finnish expert group of Hymenoptera, they studied, mapped, and collected Arctic sawflies for a book under preparation and discovered many missing samples. Aki Hakonen from Archaeology will make a confession to us about him being a stoner (not that kind). In recent years he has become more enthralled by stone and how this microcosm opens a vast array of possibilities. He takes us through (his) transformations by stone, rock, and landscapes of stone. Francisca Prieto Fernández from Environmental microbiology introduces us to pollutant recycler bacteria. During her field trip of this September to Svalbard she studied metal-associated microbial communities from contaminated sites and compared them to data from Northern Finland. Hannu I. Heikkinen from Cultural anthropology will talk to us about get-togethers in elementary schools and dance floors for ‘Nuijamies’. The Onni Talas Foundation has opened the call for grants for the calendar year 2023. The foundation supports marine research projects at Tvärminne Zoological Station, University of Helsinki, particularly concerning coastal environments. The applicants can be at the final stages of their MSc studies (then the grant period starts after receiving the degree) or PhD students. Funding is applied for annually, but a timetable and estimated budget for the whole project should be included in the application. The personal grant is 2200 € per month, including a compulsory pension insurance fee that the student has to pay (https://www.mela.fi/en/grant-and-scholarship-recipients). The foundation also funds well-justified research expenses, such as travel, boat and laboratory costs at Tvärminne, consumables, and publication costs (one open access article á 1500 € per PhD thesis). The foundation does not fund personal computers. The deadline for applications is 7.11.2022 and the applications are submitted using the form attached to this email. A popular summary of the research plan (max. 200 words), a research plan (max. 5 pages), a budget and a short CV should be attached to the application. The whole PhD plan and timetable should be presented. While the funding is granted for one year at a time, four years will be funded, provided that the project is progressing well.
