Dear all,
I’m working on the Thursday seminar program for next year, and as always I’m looking forward to your suggestions for speakers either online or on site!
So visitors, PhD thesis examiners, new people arriving (for example for new post docs arriving giving a seminar about their earlier work would be a great way introduce themselves), or just people who you think do exciting and important research!
The list of current speakers is up on https://thursdayseminarbiology.wordpress.com/ - and 2/3 talks already booked for next are about ants. Take that as a warning of what will happen if I don’t get suggestions from you 😊
Cheers,
Heikki

The last Journal Club Session will focus on a specific aspect of shorebird ecology: Dispersal in waders! The session is entitled 'Causes and consequences of dispersal in waders; Waders = Winners?', and we will discuss the causes of dispersal, the consequences for survival, the required behavioural adaptation, etc...
The session is on Friday, 13.12, 10:15-12:00 in AT115A, and led by Jelena Belojevic from the Wader Ecology research group.
We will discuss 2 papers, available on our Moodle page<https://moodle.oulu.fi/course/view.php?id=24624#section-8> (enrolment key: journal ) and enclosed here for convenience. As a bonus, you can find 2 extra papers in Moodle for wider background readings.
The following questions will be our basis for discussion:
1.
What are the costs and benefits of dispersal?
2.
What are the causes and consequences of dispersal?
3.
How can habitat structure and climatic events influence dispersal, and in turn population viability?
4.
What could be some alternative (i.e. behavioral responses) to phenotypic plasticity in dispersal decisions?
Everyone is welcome without prior registration.
Thanks to all research groups and participants who contributed to bringing this Journal Club to life!

There will be list on the coffee room table for you to mark what you’re planning to bring so we can coordinate a bit and maximize diversity!
Cheers,
Heikki

Hei,
Tervetuloa Eläimiin kohdistuvan tutkimuksen eettiset kysymykset -keskustelutilaisuuteen 30.1.2025!
TAPAHTUMA: Eläimiin kohdistuvan tutkimuksen eettiset kysymykset<https://www.tenk.fi/fi/tapahtumat/elaimiin-kohdistuvan-tutkimuksen-eettiset…>
Tutkimuseettisen neuvottelukunnan (TENK) Luonnon- ja ympäristöntutkimuksen eettiset periaatteet ja ennakkoarviointiyhteistyö (LYTE) -hankkeen tavoitteena on laatia kansalliset eettiset periaatteet ja ennakkoarvioinnin malli luontoon ja ympäristöön kohdistuvalle tutkimukselle.
Järjestämme tutkimusyhteisölle ja aiheen parissa muuten työskenteleville keskustelutilaisuuden, jossa pohditaan, minkälaisia erityiskysymyksiä ilmastoon ja avaruuteen kohdistuvalla tutkimuksella on etiikan näkökulmasta.
Tilaisuus on LYTE-hankkeen puitteissa järjestettävän keskustelusarjan neljäs osa. Sarjassa käsitellään teemoittain luontoon ja ympäristöön kohdistuvan tutkimuksen eettisiä kysymyksiä. Hyödynnämme keskustelusarjan sisältöjä eettisen ohjeen laatimistyössä.
Aika: torstai 30.1.2025 klo 10-12
Paikka: Teams
Ohjelma:
Tilaisuuden avaus, LYTE-työryhmän jäsen, yliopistonlehtori Eva Ruusuvuori (Helsingin yliopisto)
Ethical questions in animal research
Johtaja Hanna-Marja Voipio, Koe-eläinkeskus (KEKS, Oulun yliopisto)
Erityisasiantuntija Tiina Kauppinen, Luonnonvarakeskus (Luke), Eläinten hyvinvointikeskus (EHK)

Tapahtumaan osallistuvien toivotaan pohtivan jo ennakkoon seuraavia kysymyksiä:
* Minkälaisia tutkimuksen ympäristövaikutuksiin liittyviä eettisiä pohdintoja olet omassa työssäsi kohdannut?
* Keskustelitko eettisistä kysymyksistä jonkun kanssa, mistä sait tukea? Millä tavalla hyötyjä ja haittoja punnittiin, ja kuinka asia ratkesi?
* Kuinka eläimiin kohdistuva tutkimus tulisi huomioida laadittavassa eettisessä ohjeessa?
* Minkälaisia erityispiirteitä tällaisella tutkimuksella on tutkimusetiikan näkökulmasta?
