Visual Summary from "Your Voice Matters" Workshop

Dear colleagues, Biodiverse Anthropocenes co-organized a multidisciplinary workshop on the 28th November, on the topic "Climate Action VS Biodiversity Protection?". More than 35 participants joined the workshop, mostly undergraduate students coming from every faculty of our University. I've included for you here a visual summary of the 3h discussions, sketched by an artist hired for the occasion<https://bigbrain.agency/nikki-schmidt/>. [cid:f576e33d-2441-4732-814f-17b5caccb825] Participants were first introduced to the topics of climate crisis, ecosystem services, and the challenges in balancing climate action and biodiversity conservation ("The Aim..." section in the visual). They were then divided between their field of study and discussed 1- which were their priorities ("Values" section), 2- how they see the Oulu region in 2050 ("Our Legacy" section), 3- how to achieve this vision ("Making it work!" section). The event ended with a joint discussion between the groups. A majority expressed their will to have more in-person events on the matter, and wish for cross-faculty discussions to envision a sustainable future. It was a great event mixing science and art for multidisciplinarity and youth empowerment. Subject: Two open Postdoctoral positions in Restoration Ecology group in Umeå Hello dear friends and colleagues! We have just opened two 2-year post-doc positions, I would be really happy if you can share these in your networks! The first one is about large-scale restoration fires and fire-mimicking treatments that are continuously conducted in a large landscape in central Sweden, we want to look at the biodiversity effects of these treatments. The study object is mainly insects. The two-year position will begin as soon as we get the right person here, before the field season 2024. Another part of the project is to use a large dataset on biodiversity and forest structures to develop models on how to predict biodiversity hotspots. Dear colleagues, the last Thursday seminar of this year will take place in zoom (link below) on Thu 14th Dec, 12:15, with Dr. Dieter Thomas Tietze, NABU (Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union), Germany, on "Macroevolution of Tits with Tietze" Abstract: A very common and one of the most wide-spread parid species, the Coal Tit (Periparus ater), challenged our definition of a bird species. Its "Tietze, Tietze" song appears similar across the Palearctic, but allows insights into evolutionary processes. It took us over a decade to reconstruct a dated multi-gene phylogeny of all parid species. Based on it, we studied the biogeographic history as well as climate-niche and song evolution. In the genomic era, we can address various questions of functional causation. We have secured 3.5 years funding to recruit for a research planner / coordinator position at University of Helsinki (intended to be based at Viikki campus).
