In the unit meeting today I presented an overview of the Bachelor's graduate survey and Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the past nine years (slides attached). The main message is that we are doing very well in teaching, based on the survey results. However, Heikki pointed out that we are missing the voice of those students who don't graduate, and therefore it is essential to carefully examine the feedback we receive from courses. Moreover, the student guild Syntaksis is collecting feedback every spring and there will be a joint event to go through that next year.
The three-year average percentage of master's students who graduate on time is only 36%, compared to 63% of bachelor's students. The likely reason for this is too demanding master's projects and a lack of support in writing the thesis. All supervisors need to pay attention to the extent of the master's projects - they should be doable within 7.5 months of full-time work.
We need help from PhD students and postdocs in organizing thesis writing sessions for master's students. You can cover your teaching responsibility with this. Anyone interested, please contact Kaisa Lehosmaa. She has organized this before and can share all the existing material and expertise!
