Support for ERC Consolidator Grant Applicants, Sign up by 23 September

Dear Researchers Sign up by 23 September: Support for ERC Consolidator Grant Applicants European Research Council Consolidator Grants (ERC CoG)<https://erc.europa.eu/funding/consolidator-grants> are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators with 7-12 years of experience since the award of their PhD. CoG Call 2023 is expected to open 28 September (deadline 2 February 2023) and fund some 300 grants with the budget of 595 million euros. University of Oulu wants to encourage its researchers to apply for ERC and will provide a support scheme for selected applicants to prepare for the 2023 Calls. All researchers planning to submit ERC Consolidator Grant 2023 can express their interest to be included in the support process by answering to a short Webropol questionnaire<https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/16C11FD14B9F96DF> by 23.9.2022. The applicants will be asked to provide a short description of the research idea (max. 2000 characters). All information provided will be kept confidential. The Research and Project Services will assess the technical eligibility of the applicants against the ERC Consolidator eligibility criteria. The applicants who are selected for the coaching will follow a pre-agreed timetable for the proposal preparation and submit their final proposal to the call closing February 2023. Timetable of the support process for ERC CoG 2023 applicants: * early October: Proposal preparation kick-off: Research and Project Services will schedule a short meeting with the PI to go through the main aspects of ERC, proposal templates and discuss the preparation process. * October-January: Proposal preparation coaching sessions. The proposal drafts will be reviewed in stages by the Research Funding Specialist of the Faculty and a scientific peer mentor. The coaching will provide the PIs with feedback on e.g.: * PI profile: CV and Track Record * Key ideas and concept of the ERC project * Ground-breaking nature of the research project * Feasibility of the outlined scientific approach * January: Final draft proposal reviewed by an external expert specialised in the ERC funding * limited number of reviews: will be allocated to the PIs based on the advancement of the proposal preparation * In addition, the following technical support will be provided to the PIs: - Annotated proposal templates - Budget table and support with the budget preparation - Support from the Research Funding Specialists to fill in the Funding and Tenders Portal administrative forms, comment draft applications etc. Note this call to express interest to be included in the support process is targeted at Consolidator Grant applicants. Support will be available for all the call categories and similar announcement to register will be published in November for the Advanced Grant 2023 applicants.

Philip Farrugia, University of Malta Abstract: According to the World Health Organisation, 'today, there are an estimated two million different kinds of medical devices on the world market, categorised into more than 7000 generic devices groups'. Customers want medical products (e.g. a hearing aid) that integrate a variety of functions, without increasing significantly their weight or overall size. Furthermore, there is a trend to incorporate software in such artefacts to make them smarter. This poses significant challenges on design engineers who must make sure first and foremost to understand well the requirements of an array of multiple end users. Although tacit knowledge and skills are transferable, explicit domain knowledge about the end users and their contexts is often limited. The problem-solving problem process is heavily influenced by the explicit knowledge that the designer has as this will impact the understanding of the users needs and the solution to be designed. Computer-based support systems can provide active support to cater for such limitations during the design process, especially during the early design stages. Within this context, this presentation gives an overview of the research carried out at the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Malta, aimed at developing computer-based support tools to assist design engineers in developing medical products and beyond, in particular customisable products. Short bio: Philip Farrugia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Malta (UM). He received the B. Eng. (Hons) degree from UM in 2001 and a Ph.D. with research related to 'Computer-Aided Early Form Modelling' from the same university. Since then Philip coordinated a number of research projects funded from various programmes, including Horizon2020, aimed at developing computer-based design support mostly for medical devices, smart therapeutic and rehabilitation products. Such projects were partnered with various industrial sectors including manufacturing and serious gaming. His current research interests are computer support for engineering design, Design for Health and Wellbeing, Design for Additive Manufacturing, Design of Product Service Systems and Human Factors in Design. Course announcement Feel free to distribute this announcement further! Hello all! Do you sometimes feel that this world is not built for you? Please see below an invitation to take part on the doctoral course on “Designing for diversity and inclusion”. About the course Our world is designed under the assumption that there is an average user, customer, patient, or student. This leaves most of us struggling dealing with average buildings, services and products that fit no one. This concept of “average” does not need to be carried over to digital environments like websites, apps or online solutions. Looking at and through our past mistakes, we can learn how can we design a digital society to be more accessible and more aware of its inaccessibility, recognizing and addressesing it gradually. Diversity is not just about disability! It includes gender, language, culture, and our physical and mental abilities that can vary from person to person or even from day to day in the same person. This 1 ECTS credits course (27 hours of in and off class work) will help you: * Understand and apply the basics of the design process based on Human-computer interaction and interaction design fields in relation to Person-Centric Healthcare. * Understand and reflect on basic concepts of inclusive design, e.g. ways people are diverse, preconceptions, discrimination, exclusion, and consequences of exclusion in design in the physical and digitalized world – e.g., discrimination by AI * Recognize inclusive designs and the difference to universal design. * Understand and reflect on inclusive design as an inherent part of the design process - instead of a good to have feature. * Get familiar with, reflect on, and apply methods that increase empathy in design toward people different from the designer * Reflect on the limitations of the methods * Apply them in the design context of the digital technology * Experience how it is to design for people’s diversity. Who can participate? The course is intended for the doctoral level, however Master’s students who are interested in the topic are also welcome to participate. Maximum 20 people. She has worked on designing social features in technology supporting health behaviour change. Since 2019, she is working at the university of Gothenburg in the division of Human-Computer Interaction. Currently she is a senior lecturer and teaches interaction design focused on health and wellbeing from the perspective of diversity. Her research has turn toward health knowledge dissemination, and attitude change specifically toward invisible conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, or mental health issues.
