Dear all, Several people have asked me about the English teaching connected with this course. Eva will run a pre-session (to be timetabled) before her session in December. Jolene will not have a seperately timetabled pre-session, but she asks you to go to her office (BF101-24 - one of the "cubicles" in the old biophysics labs directly under my office) at 14.00 sharp on the 24th for a brief talk about the session before starting the lesson in KE1139 at 14.15. The research of the student or post-doctoral fellow will focus on developing and validating these models with possible application on drug discovery projects.Experience and background in basic molecular and cell biological methods (cell and tissue culture, PCR, cloning, mutagenesis, Western blotting, immunofluorescence) as well as basic skills in laboratory animal workare needed. The applicant should be fluent in both computer skills and English. Flies have a highly sophisticated immune defense. In contrast to mammals, Drosophila has no adaptive i.e. antibody mediated immunity, which makes it a valid model for studying the pattern recognition receptors and signaling pathways of the innate immunity. On this premise we use Drosophila model to discover novel classes of gene products that are important to combat pathogens. Besides the Drosophila model, we have established a state-of-the-art zebrafish facility in order to carry out large-scale ENU mutagenesis screens in zebrafish to identify gene products that are necessary for normal resistance against selected pathogens. This system enables forward genetic screening with a model organism with fully developed immune system. For example, we will use a zebrafish model for tuberculosis to identify new disease-modifying genes. Our research group is located at the Institute of Medical Technology (Tampere) and s led by Professor Mika Rämet. Ideal candidate should have prior knowledge about the basic methods in molecular biology. Most importantly, we expect a successful candidate to have enthusiastic attitude towards biomedical research. Appointment will be for two years at standard graduate student salary level and it is subject for continuation until Ph.D. defense. Let's go pick cranberries in a nearby bog on Tuesday 14.10.2008. We start 16.00 at the ball statue in front of the university main library. You need a bicycle or a lift from someone, warm enough clothes, shoes that can tolerate the wet land and a bucket (or plastic bags if you don't have one). Wild cranberries are picked individually by hand. Protein Production and Analysis

Dear all, If you are on the Protein Production and Analysis course and have read the manual you will have noticed one "cut and paste" too many. On page 2 it says the practicals begin at 8.00 on Thursday 1st february. They of course start on Monday 13th October - but still at 8.00 sharp. The demonstrators will start with an introduction to the practical class and if you are late you will miss this important information, so please no repeat of todays "starting sharp" problems.
