Professori Taina Pihlajaniemen tutkimusryhmä (Oulu Center of Cell-Matrix Research, Biocenter Oulu ja Biolääketieteen laitos/Lääketieteellinen biokemia ja molekyylibiologia) etsii 1-2 pro gradu -työntekijää tutkimusprojekteihin, jotka selvittävät erilaisten kollageenimolekyylien tehtäviä yksilön kehityksessä sekä fysiologisissa ja patologisissa tiloissa (mm. karvan kasvu, tulehdustaudit, syöpä). Opiskelijalta edellytetään valmiutta työskennellä soluviljelmillä ja hiirimalleilla. Pro gradu työssään menestyneellä opiskelijalla on mahdollisuus jatkaa väitöskirjaprojektin parissa. English for biochemists III

Dear International MSc students. While I was off ill the language center got notification that they would receive funding for a course aimed specifically at international MSc students (and exchange students) which will be named "English for Biochemists III". The course will be 3op and aimed at scientific writing and presentational skills. It will be similar in format to English for Biochemists II (see study guide for details), but there will be some differences. The courses are however so similar that if you have English II, you cannot get credits as well for English III. English II (which English III is based on) is a tough course, but it gets very good feedback and it gives essential skills. I would urge everyone to consider it as an optional course and especially if you plan to write a dissertation. There are no details yet of when it will run, but it will be sometime in the Spring term and I have a meeting about it in the next week. Cell 2004, 15(6): 853-65; Stelzl, U. et al., Cell 2005, 122(6): 957- 968; Venkatesan, K. et al., Nature Methods, in press; Tyynela, J. et al., EMBO J. 2000, 19, 2786-2792; Tikka, S. et al., Brain, in press). Protein complexes will be systematically validated using pull-down assays, co-immunoprecipitations, microchip protein/peptide arrays, si-RNA, co- localization, functional readouts and bioinformatic analyses. In collaborative efforts, we aim to identify potential modulators of disease processes and functionally validate the predictions using disease model systems. The ultimate aim of this project is to reveal interconnections between molecular cascades important for the function of CNS in the normal and pathological states, which can be exercised further to facilitate drug development. A background in basic techniques of molecular and cell biology is desirable. Male infertility is often reflecting problems in the production of sperm, or spermatogenesis, which is a complex differentiation process governed by a strict regulation of gene expression. In our research, we are focusing on the characterization of the mechanisms of male fertility by investigating the molecular factors that are involved in the function of testis. We are especially interested in exploring how small regulatory RNAs control male germ cell differentiation at the level of post-transcriptional mRNA regulation and gene silencing. We are looking for a highly motivated and hard-working PhD student with a background in biochemistry, or cell/ molecular biology. The project includes various techniques, such as cDNA cloning and protein expression analysis, in vivo electroporation of testis, immunostaining of germ cells, fluorescence microscopy, analysis of the genetically modified mice, and techniques for detecting small RNAs in testis. Hei Abi-päivät 2008 ovat takana päin. Biokemian laitokseen kävi kahden päivän aikana tutustumassa 92 abia mikä on jonkin verran vähemmän kuin viime vuosina. Laitoksen väestä vieraluja olivat vetämässä Olli Niemitalo, Maija Malin, Marja-Maija Ristiluoma, Nina Kokkonen, Outi Lampela, Mikko Salin, Tiila Kiema ja Kristian Koski. Histonin esittelypisteessä isossa aulassa päivystivät 2. vuosikurssin opiskelijat (+ ainakin Susanna Teppo ja Outi Halonen kolmosista) Kiitokset Kaikille !! During "Abi-days" 92 senior high school students visited Department of Biochemistry . Hei Nyt on aika miettiä kevään opiskelijaseminaarien aikoja. Noudatamme syksyllä käyttöön otettua 2 seminaaria / kerta systeemiä. Jos aiot pitää seminaarisi keväällä 2009, ilmoita minulle mahdollisimman pian ( viimeistään 30.11. ) sinulle sopiva päivä ja mahdollinen varapäivä, niin minä järjestelen niitä niin että tuo syksyn käytäntö toteutuu.
