Recreation day 6th of June by the Biochemical Society of Oulu: climbing in Tietomaa and brunch at Tuba

(Apologies for cross-posting through several e-mail lists) Dear recipient, The Biochemical Society of Oulu is organizing a recreation day for biochemists and biochemistry-minded professionals and students on Saturday 6th of June. The day will start at 12:00 in Tietomaa (Nahkatehtaankatu 6), where we will climb down the tower of Tietomaa that is 40 m in height. The climbing equipment is provided and climbing guided (also in English) by the Climbing Society of Oulu. The Biochemical Society of Oulu sponsors this climbing activity about 50 % of the cost, and the members of the Society are at the first priority. The climbing costs 11 e, and the payment instructions will be sent to you after registration. The number of participants for climbing is limited to 10 persons so be quick! The registration is permanent and deadline is on Wed 3rd of June. The day will continue by socializing at 14:00 with brunch at Restaurant Tuba (Mannenkatu 2). You are very welcome to join the brunch even if you don't want to take part in the climbing activity! Each participant pays the brunch him/herself. The list price for the brunch is 16 e per person but there is a potential chance for a group discount. Please register for the brunch by Wed 3rd of June so we can confirm the table reservation to the restaurant. One postdoctoral researcher (structural biology) and one Ph.D. student (cell/molecular biology) positions are available from 01.09.2015 onwards in the laboratory of Sakari Kellokumpu/Tuomo Glumoff at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, University of Oulu, Finland. Funding for the positions is available from the Academy of Finland currently for 4 years. The research group is engaged in molecular glycobiology and focuses on molecular mechanisms of glycosylation and glycosylation-associated human diseases. Suitable candidates should fill the following requirements: The structural biology post-doc: The applicant should hold a doctoral degree (or soon receive one), have experience in protein crystallography, and preferably also be familiar with production and purification of proteins for structural studies. Experience with membrane proteins, or structural studies with alternative techniques (like SAXS or EM) is considered a surplus. We offer a state-of-the-art working environment utilizing Biocenter Oulu protein crystallography core facility, which is also a national affiliate center of the EU-funded Instruct network (http://www.oulu.fi/biocenter/protein-crystallography/struct ). The PhD student position: The applicant should hold a M.Sc. degree (or receive one before 01.01. 2016) with a proven cell and molecular biology background. The work will include animal cell cultures, microscopy, plasmid purification, mutagenesis, protein interaction studies and use of antibodies for protein detection. We offer state-of-the-art working environment that provides recently renovated cell culture facilities, wide field and confocal microscopes, high content automated protein interaction screening system, as well as access to the flow cytometer core facility and other core facilities close by in the Kontinkangas campus and at the Biocenter Oulu. The salary for the postdoctoral researcher will be on the demand level 5 and for the Ph.D. student on the demand levels 2-4. Both are based on the salary system in the Finnish Universities and includes a component based on personal performance. The Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki has Academy of Finland funded positions open for outstanding PhD student(s) and postdoctoral researcher(s) to work on project(s) studying protein kinase mediated cellular signaling and how this is altered in human cancer. Particular focus will be put on using quantitative mass spectrometry to identify the cancer driving changes in the molecular context of proteins and in protein(s) phosphorylation status. Interested and highly motivated students that are enthusiastic about the prospect of driving forefront research in an international environment are encouraged to apply. A strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology and/or computational biology is an asset. Good written and spoken English as well as the desire to work in a team-oriented environment are required. Want to visit local bio-related companies in oulu NEXT WEEK?

(Apologiez for cross-posting through several e-mail lists) Dear recipient, The Biochemical Society of Oulu is organizing two trips on consecutive days for its members to visit local Bio-field companies here in Oulu. We will be visiting Admescope on Wednesday 27th of May at 15:30 o'clock and Paras Biopharma on Thursday 28th of May at 15 o'clock. Our society organizes these types of events every year and they're exclusively members-only. This time we have a small number of these limited places available so we would like to invite non-members aboard! If you're interested, register quickly to our secretary Anu Laitala (Anu.Laitala(a)oulu.fi<mailto:Anu.Laitala@oulu.fi>). Please state clearly if you'd like to participate in both visits or just other one. This is a great opportunity to get to know new people and see what these companies do. You'll also have a chance to become a member of the Biochemical Society of Oulu where you'll have first privileges for future events like this. Visits are free of charge. There will be no organized mass transport to the locations but if you'd really like to participate but don't have any way to reach these places, please let us know and we'll think of something. [OLuT-tiedotus] Tiedekerho-ohjausta syksyllä 2015 - mahdollisesti opintopisteitä tarjolla!

Hei, OuLUMA-keskus järjesti tänä keväänä tiedekerhoja neljälletoista Oulun alueen alakouluille ja suuren suosion saanutta tiedekerhotoimintaa olisi tarkoitus jatkaa myös ensi syksynä. Oulun alueen alakouluilla 3-6-luokkalaisille toteutettavien tiedekerhojen tarkoituksena on tarjota laajasti luonnontieteellisten ilmiöiden tutkimisen mahdollisuuksia innostaen sekä kasvattaen oppilaiden mielenkiintoa ja tietämystä luonnontieteitä kohtaan. Myös soveltava ja toiminnallinen matematiikka on yksi osa tiedekerhoa. Kerhotoiminnan jatkamiseksi tarvitsemmekin mukaan innokkaita ohjaajia. Keväällä 2015 ohjaajat saivat/saavat kerho-ohjauksesta kolme opintopistettä, jotka oli mahdollisuus hyväksilukea useampaan kandidaatti- tai maisterivaiheen kurssivaihtoehtoon riippuen opiskelijan koulutusalasta. Tänä keväänä yhtenä esimerkkinä hyväksiluetusta kurssista oli aineenopettajien valinnaiskurssi "Laaja-alainen aineenopettajuus" ja kerho-ohjaajat saivatkin kyseisellä kurssilla hyväksiluettua pedagogisten opintojensa pakollisen valinnaiskurssin. Mikäli kurssin suorittamisesta kiinnostuneita opiskelijoita on tarpeeksi, kurssi voidaan todennäköisesti järjestää myös ensi syksynä! Jos olet kiinnostunut toimimaan kerho-ohjaajana syksyllä 2015 ja kolmen opintopisteen (3 op) paketti kiinnostaa, lähetäthän mahdollisimman pian (viim. 27.5) sähköpostia osoitteeseen ouluntiedekerhot(at)gmail.com. Tarkoituksena on tässä vaiheessa ainoastaan kartoittaa kiinnostuneiden opiskelijoiden määrää - viestin lähettäminen ei luonnollisesti sido opiskelijaa kurssin suorittamiseen.
