The aim of the project is to bring together representatives from various fields to discuss the current state and future prospects of genetic research and its applications. Genes and Society project aims to discuss these questions both academically and among wider audiences by organizing seminars and lecture series in collaboration with both Finnish and foreign experts of the relevant fields of science. The first Argumenta-lecture is on Tuesday, June 2 at 15.00-16.00 (coffee at 14.40). The lecture will be held in the auditorium of Kastelli Research Center, Aapistie 1, Oulu. PhD student position at the Department of Biosciences, Division of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Helsinki Three-dimensional morphology of autophagosome formation Our group has successfully used electron tomography to visualize the three-dimensional morphology of nascent autophagosomes. We have demonstrated that nascent autophagosomes can have membrane connections with several other organelles, including endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lipid droplets, Golgi complex and endosomes/lysosomes (Ylä-Anttila et al. 2009, Biazik et al. 2015). The PhD project aims to continue this research, by using live-cell imaging combined with correlative light and electron microscopy and electron tomography. The project is best suited for a person with interest in morphological methods, including fluorescence and electron microscopy. Starting salary is approximately 2170 EUR per month. The funding for the position starts October 1st, 2015 and ends August 31, 2019. The research will take place at the University of Helsinki, Department of Biosciences, located on the Viikki campus 10 km North from the centre of Helsinki. The project will include a research visit to the Babraham Institute, Cambridge, UK. Dear student, The Biochemical Society of Oulu is organizing two trips on consecutive days for its members to visit local Bio-field companies here in Oulu. We will be visiting Admescope on Wednesday 27th of May at 15:30 o'clock and Paras Biopharma on Thursday 28th of May at 15 o'clock. As it happens, we still have a few places left but they are limited so if you want to have a chance to visit these companies, register quickly to our secretary Anu Laitala (Anu.Laitala(a)oulu.fi<mailto:Anu.Laitala@oulu.fi>). Please state clearly if you'd like to participate in both visits or just other one. This is a great opportunity to get to know new people and see what these companies do. You'll also have a chance to become a member of the Biochemical Society of Oulu where you'll have first privileges for future events like this. Visits are free of charge. There will be no organized mass transport to the locations but if you'd really like to participate but don't have any way to reach these places, please let us know and we'll think of something. Obesity and metabolic diseases are rapidly increasing problems in modern societies. One of the key factors underlying these problems is nutrition and its interaction with genetic factors. We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join our international and enthusiastic research group to work on a project aiming to understand gene regulation in response to dietary sugars. Our research is based on a combination a large selection of experimental strategies, including Drosophila genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell and molecular biology, as well as metabolomics. Therefore, this project offers an excellent training opportunity for a candidate interested in learning a strong set of research skills. Our group works in the Viikki campus of the University of Helsinki, we are part of the Department of Biosciences as well as the Institute of Biotechnology, which offer highly supportive and interactive research environments as well as top-end research instrumentation. A successful candidate is expected to have a degree (MSc or similar) in a relevant field of biosciences and to be able to demonstrate excellent skills in experimental laboratory work, ability for analytical thinking, good communication skills as well as strong motivation for PhD studies. The project start date is negotiable, but an optimal start date is on August-September 2015. The salary is based on the salary system for Finnish universities, based on a consists of a job-specific pay component and a performance-based pay component. PhD student and Post doc positions open in Plant Growth Dynamics group PhD student and postdoctoral positions are available in the research group led by Ari Pekka Mähönen at Institute of Biotechnology/ Department of Biosciences, University of Helsinki, Finland. The positions are funded by the Centre of Excellence program of the Academy of Finland. The goal of the group is to understand the molecular regulation and cellular organization of vascular cambium, the tissue that makes all wood. We are utilizing lineage tracing techniques, molecular genetics, advanced microscopy and genomics as approaches to study the cambial cells in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. The topics of research projects will be discussed in detail during the interview of the selected candidates. Early stage researcher We are seeking an early stage researcher to work on the project component entitled "Establishment of in vivo RNAi screens for regulators of neurogenesis", ESR5, in the EU MCA Initial Training Network project R'Birth (http://www.rbirth.eu/) at the Turku Centre for Biotechnology. Much is known about actions of the MAPKs JNK and p38 in the nervous system, but the upstream regulators coordinating the diverse functions of MAPKs is often unclear. This project involves application of high-throughput methods to develop RNAi libraries suitable for stable and traceable knockdown, and apply selection to iteratively simplify the library and identify the MAPK regulators with most potent influence on different steps in neurogenesis. In parallel the activation of MAPK pathway components will be investigated by development of activator trap methods. Applicants are expected to be familiar with cell signalling and molecular biology methods. Demonstrated prior practical experience with any of the following may put a candidate at a strong advantage: manipulation of plasmid DNA and generation of point mutants, use of high-throughput methods and/or instrumentation, in vivo or ex vivo electroporation, RNAi, transposases and integrases, animal models, cell and/or tissue culture and neurogenesis. The laboratory of Ville Paavilainen at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki is looking for several graduate students and/or post-doctoral researchers for projects that investigate small-molecule natural product inhibitors of protein secretion and/or cell biological and biochemical roles of cotranslational ER translocation co-factors. The group utilizes methods of biochemistry, cell- and structural biology to understand the function of the mammalian co-translational secretory machinery. The available projects are funded by a grant from the Academy of Finland and will be discussed in detail during the interview of selected candidates. University of Helsinki and Institute of Biotechnology provide an international and dynamic research environment. Facilities include state-of-the-art core facilities for structural biology (robotic crystallization, x-ray and NMR data collection, abundant access to European synchrotrons). Applicants with a strong background in either (1) cell biology and/or biochemistry or (2) structural biology and biophysics, or in a related field, are encouraged to apply. The research group focuses on structure, function and inhibition of ADP-ribosyltransferases (ARTDs/PARPs). We use protein X-ray crystallography, activity assays and complementing biophysical techniques to understand how the signaling enzymes work. We also use screening of compound libraries and structure-based design of specific inhibitors for the enzymes to be used as chemical probes as well as drug leads.
