Dear BCO-Kieppi people,
Please, remind your new employees: We will again organize so-called "safety walks" for BCO-Kieppi people who have not yet participated in them. We will walk through our premises and locate the emergency exits, fire alarms, fire extinguishers etc, check the meeting point for emergencies, and talk about safety. Participation to this about 30 min walk is obligatory for everybody. This is organized for your own safety.
The next tour: October 15, starting at 14.00, in English. Starting point for the tours is top of the main staircase 4th floor.
See you there!
Kind regards
Pirkko and Antti

Dear all,
As of 12.10.2020, the Regional Coordination Group recommends remote working and remote conferencing always where work tasks allow this.
As a reminder I post here the University´s instructions from September 2, 2020 https://patio.oulu.fi/en/university/topical-themes/coronavirus. Particular attention must be paid to ensuring that these safety issues are taken into account and implemented in break and coffee rooms.
Kind regards
Pirkko Huhtala
The University of Oulu recommends that a face mask be used during close contact where the safety distance of 1-2 metres cannot be implemented on campus. Mouth and nose protection is one way to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. It is of paramount importance to continue to follow safety intervals of 1 to 2 meters whenever possible, to wash hands, cough on a sleeve or disposable handkerchief, and to avoid contact with the face.
The University of Oulu staff work remotely in all situations where it is possible with reasonable effort. In the case of a task which cannot be performed remotely and where it is not possible to maintain a safety distance of 1-2 meters, all persons working in the same room are recommended to wear suitable masks and/or some other protective equipment identified on the basis of the site risk assessment, such as nitrile gloves and/or facial visors (for example, teaching situations that must be arranged as contact teaching, laboratory work, transportation related to field courses, and other research and teaching situations where close contacts are evident).
The university's service tasks are mainly performed using electronic services. Where it is not possible to provide the service electronically, the employee must ensure appropriate protection with his or her supervisor before the service situation occurs. A polycarbonate cover is installed at service points. If there is no protection at the service point or it is not possible to use a usual service point, it is possible to use a face visor. In addition, other protective equipment identified on the basis of the individual and/or personal risk assessment must be used.
The university provides all its employees with fabric masks and other necessary protective equipment for working in the workplace. Fabric protectors can also be used away from the workplace (eg in public transport). Interns follow the internship site's own safety instructions.

Hei!
Tänä syksynä tapahtuu tutkimuksen IT-rintamalla aika lailla. Tietohallinto on saanut käyttöön uusia resursseja, jotka auttavat tutkijoita huomattavasti. Niinikään tieteellisen laskennan palvelu (CSC) on saanut käyttöön uusia supertietokoneita, joten laskentakapasiteetti on kasvanut huomattavasti.
Nyt olemme kiinnostuneita toiveistanne koskien tutkimuksen IT-aiheita. Paikallisista ja CSC:n palveluista on mahdollista järjestää zoom-koulutusten sarja, jossa käsitellään eniten toivottuja aiheita. Pyrimme toteuttamaan koulutukset demo-henkisesti, eli pyrimme näyttämään yksityiskohtaisesti kuinka joku tehtävä voidaan suorittaa. CSC on luvannut esitellä omia ympäristöjään etäkokouksissa.
Alla olevassa listassa on esimerkkejä tulevista muutoksista.
1. Oulussa otetaan käyttöön yksi CSC:n entisen Taito-supertietokoneen noodi. Sille on tarjolla useita rooleja. Tästä koneesta on erityisesti apua eräajotyyppisissä, rinnakkaistuvissa tehtävissä.
2. Kataja-laskentaklusteri laajenee. Tämä edellistä pienempi laskentapalvelimien sarja käy hyvin keskikokoisten tehtävien laskuun, ja monissa palvelimissa on GPU-kortit mukana, mikä kyllä tehostaa laskentaa paljon, jos ohjelmisto vain osaa niitä käyttää.
3. Tutkimuksen Windows-palvelimet. Tutkijoille on otettu käyttöön jalava1-palvelin Windows-tehtävien laskuun. Ohjelmistoja lisätään tarpeen mukaan. Opiskelijoille on oma Salava1-palvelin.
4. Windowsin ja Linuxin eriävät kotihakemistot. Uuden levyjärjestelmän teknisten seikkojen myötä tietohallinto on päätynyt ratkaisuun, jossa linux-käyttäjille tulee omat kotihakemistot sekä Windows- että Linux-käyttöön. Windows-käyttäjille tämä muutos ei näy.
5. RedCap-palvelu. Oulun yliopistolla on käytössä RedCap-palvelin sensitiivisen tiedon keräämiseen.
6. Konttipalvelut. Palveluja voidaan kääriä ns. kontteihin (containers), jolloin niiden hallinta ja ylläpito on helpompaa.
7. Datan hallinta ja arkistointi. Tutkimusdataa kertyy nykyään enemmän kuin koskaan. On tärkeää, että data kerätään, käsitellään, julkaistaan ja arkistoidaan kestävällä tavalla.
8. Pilvipalvelut. Yhä suurempi osa tiedoista on mahdollista tallettaa ja saavuttaa pilvipalveluista.
Lisäksi CSC:n palveluista voisi mainita vaikkapa
10. CSC:n uudet superkoneet ja niiden käyttöönotto 11. Allas-objektivarasto ja sen käyttö.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a lot of new activities on IT-services that concern research and teaching. IT-administration has got new resources that help research a lot. Furthermore the Center of scientific computing (CSC) has installed new supercomputers that increase the available computing capacity considerably.
Today we are interested about your wishes and comments concerning the research-IT. It is possible to arrange a set of Zoom-meetings concerning both local and CSC's services based on your wishes. We try to make those sessions by using a demo-based approach, explaining one or few wishes at a time. CSC has agreed to demonstrate their services online as well.
Below there are few examples of the forthcoming changes. The list is not complete and you can suggest your own ideas as well.
1. We got one of the nodes from the former CSC's supercomputer that will start this autumn here in Oulu. There are several roles on this computing cluster but the main usage will be batch-jobs, especially if the code could be parallelized.
2. Kataja-server cluster is expanding. This set of calculation servers is smaller than the previous one but it is suitable for medium-range tasks and many of those servers also has GPU-cards installed.
3. There are two new Windows-based calculation servers, Jalava1 for staff and Salava1 for students.
4. Central disk repository is moving and due to technical reasons there will be a separate home directory for Linux-users. There will be no visible changes for Windows-users.
5. RedCap-service. Univ. Oulu has started a RedCap-service that is suitable for collecting sensitive information.
6. Container-services. IT-services tests a possibility to wrap services into so called containers to ease up administration.
7. Data management and administration. Research data is accumulating faster than ever. Therefore it is important to manage data collection, processing, publication and archiving.
8. Cloud services. Cloud-based services are becoming more and more common in our everyday life.
Furthermore CSC has several new developments. For example:
9. Automatic management of CSC's virtual servers ePouta and cPouta. IT-administration wants to facilitate more efficient usage of CSC's services. Therefore IT-services helps researchers to start and scale those services.
10. CSC's new supercomputers
11. Allas-object storage.

Hi all,
Unfortunately the -20 cold room needs to be emptied again as soon as possible. The cooling system needs to be defrosted.
The room is currently at -13 and can't go any lower.
BRs,
Antti
