Hello,
as many of you know, I was part of a research expedition to the South Sandwich Islands in serach of new species in the deep sea. This expedition was a great success (some of you might have seen the news about the colossal squid film earlier this year). But what is it actually like being on an expedtion to one of the most remote islands in the world?
To answer this question I would like to invite you to a little presentation on 14th of November in the coffee room of the Ecology and Genetics Unit (B235) or remote in Teams at 14.00. This will not be specifically a scientific presentation (although a little science is naturally in there), but more a general showcase of highlights and what working on a research vessel is like.
Feel free to share this event with anyone interested 🙂
All the best and see you soon,
Max

Dear colleagues,
a reminder:
Biology Thursday seminar continues 6th of November, 12:15, on site in room SÄ110,
with Dr. Jana Flury, Ecology and Genetics department, Univ. Oulu, on
" Living at the limit: Genomic insights into plant adaptation to harsh environments"
How do plants survive and thrive at the edges of their ecological limits? Adaptation to new or changing environments is key to a species' persistence, and while some well-known "genes of adaptation" can drive phenotypic shifts, also structural genomic changes might play a role. In this talk, I will explore how transposable elements have shaped the genomes of different Brassicaceae species in response to geo-climatic factors such as temperature, precipitation, latitude, and elevation. I will also discuss how a shift in the mating system of North American Arabidopsis lyrata relates to the species' range limits and the genomic consequences of this transition. Finally, I will share preliminary insights from my current project Genomics of northern adaptation led by Academy Researcher Fellow Tiina Mattila, where we are uncovering the genetic basis of high-latitude adaptation and the distribution of genetic variation in European A. lyrata.

Hei Jouni, ihan lyhyesti aikaisempaan viestiini liittyen.
Best wishes
Ystävällisesti
Katja

LYHTY – Bridging PhD Education to Careers in Natural Resources and Environment
Workshop 9.12.2025
The Kvantum Institute at the University of Oulu warmly invites doctoral researchers to a full-day event featuring research presentations and career development activities. The programme includes guest talks by three invited speakers on doctoral training practices (University of Oulu, LUKE, Boliden Kevitsa), as well as a facilitated workshop focusing on career development beyond academia.
🎯 Purpose of the Event:
To foster interaction between doctoral researchers and non-academic organisations, including companies and stakeholders. The aim is to build bridges between academia and working life, and to support researchers in exploring career opportunities beyond the university.
📌 Event Structure:
The day is divided into two sessions, and doctoral researchers are welcome to attend both:
* Morning session: Focused on presenting and discussing PhD research plans
* Afternoon session (LYHTY): Dedicated to exploring the working life relevance of doctoral training, including skills, expectations, and career pathways outside academia
👥 Who Should Attend:
All doctoral researchers and their supervisors are welcome, especially those working in the fields of natural resources and environmental sciences, to whom the event is particularly targeted. NOTE! The Morning Session is optional and especially for those who need to complete the research plan seminar course. The actual work-life relevance part and bridge plan exercises are in the afternoon session (LYHTY WORKSHOP). Everyone is welcome, regardless of the stage of the dissertation! Doctoral researchers involved in Kvantum Institute projects – your participation in both sessions is warmly encouraged!
