Hello,
Anyone interested in arranging a course for the university’s Arctic Summer Programme (more info below) in August 2026? If yes, please let me know!
This year, the courses were either 2 or 5 ECTS.
Best wishes,
Lumi
Dear Deans of Education,
I hope my email finds you well.
My name is Könül Ahmadzada and I work as a Specialist in International Affairs at the Unit for Strategy and Science Policy (STY). I am reaching out to you as our unit is looking into the possibility of organizing the Arctic Summer Programme<https://www.oulu.fi/en/apply/arctic-summer-programme> again in August 2026 at the University of Oulu. The programme has been quite successful in the previous years in bringing together existing modules under a unified framework, offering international students a unique learning experience while showcasing our University’s teaching quality, research expertise, and facilities.
STY, in collaboration with other services, is responsible for the operations and logistical arrangements of the summer programme, and we are currently looking for faculties and programs to take part in the planning and implementation of teaching during the summer 2026. By participating, the faculties can:
* Raise their international profile and attract prospective students.
* Pilot new courses and highlight areas of expertise.
* Strengthen collaborations with strategic partners and expand staff networks.
* Benefit from a shared operational framework.
We would be delighted if your faculty would like to contribute a course to the Arctic Summer Programme. Please let us know if it is interesting, and we will be happy to continue to discuss the possibilities.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Have a great day!
Best,
Könül Ahmadzada (Ms.)

Hi (in English below),

Nowadays, research is often conducted in collaboration with both academic institutions and companies, using various funding sources. As a result, it's often necessary to formalize agreements between the parties involved by creating a written contract. Come to the training and learn more about contract matters.
The course aims to teach why contracts are necessary, what types of contracts are used, what obligations contracts impose on a researcher's work, and what the key elements of contracts are. The course will not go through contract clauses in detail but will highlight the essential points that a researcher should know about contracts. After the course, you will understand what the abbreviations NDA, MTA, DTA, PLA, GA, CA, etc., mean.
The course is suitable for PhD students, project managers, post-docs and research group leaders. PhD students can earn 0.5 ECTS credits from the course. If you do not need credits, you can choose the lectures that interest you most.
The course will be conducted in English.

A reminder:
Biology Thursday seminar will continue 18th Sep, 12:15 on site in room AT117, with
Dr. Patrick Nichols, who just started as a post doc at the Ecology and genetics unit here in Oulu, on
"Molecules to management: navigating uncertainty in environmental DNA biomonitoring of coral reefs"
Abstract: Environmental DNA (eDNA) is transforming how we monitor biodiversity, offering a rapid, non-invasive way to detect species from genetic traces in water, soil, or air. As its use expands across ecosystems and management contexts, there's growing urgency to understand how reliable these tools are, and how to communicate their limitations. This talk explores how uncertainty arises in eDNA data, from natural ecological variability to technical and methodological choices, and what that means for its application in real-world conservation. Using coral reefs, I evaluate how eDNA captures biodiversity patterns over time, how sampling methods influence detection of elusive species, and how sensitive eDNA is to early signs of invasive organisms. To bridge the gap between detection and decision-making, I apply statistical models that estimate error rates and help translate molecular signals into actionable insights. Ultimately, this work underscores the importance of pairing innovation with transparency, helping managers use eDNA effectively while navigating its uncertainties.
