FYI, Juan We are seeking a doctoral researcher to join a Research Council of Finland funded project at the University of Helsinki investigating the genetic and molecular basis of colour pattern diversity in tiger moths. The position is available to start in early 2026, and is fully funded for 3.5 years. We will explore the genetic mechanisms controlling colourful wing patterns and the potential repeated evolution of novel colour pattern genes. The specific goals of the PhD project can be influenced by the candidate but could involve a mix of genomic analysis, molecular lab work, insect rearing, behavioural experiments, CRISPR, fieldwork and chemical analysis. We welcome applications from candidates with: * A strong interest in evolutionary biology research. * A degree in ecology, evolution or related field. * Interest in fieldwork. Basic bioinformatics or molecular lab skills are also beneficial. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Dear colleagues, Biology Thursday seminar continues on 9th October, 12:15 on zoom with Dr. Lee Henry, Queen Mary University of London, on "Symbiosis as an adaptive process: evolving new phenotypes through microbial mutualisms" Cooperative interactions, or symbioses, between hosts and microbes have been central to the evolution of life on Earth. By supplying essential resources - such as nutrients and bioactive molecules - symbionts have enabled hosts to colonize otherwise inaccessible habitats, defend against natural enemies, and exploit new energy sources. Symbiosis has also been pivotal in the origin and persistence of complex life, most notably through the merger of once-independent organisms. I will discuss how and why symbioses evolve, the mechanisms that maintain them, and what happens as they become increasing intertwined. The MSc program in Computational Biology and Data Analysis invites you to visit the CSC High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities in Kajaani, home to some of the most powerful computing clusters in Europe. The visit will take place 31.10.2025 from 08:00-16:00. Before we depart, we will have a short info session at the university, where we’ll introduce what you’ll see at CSC. After that, we’ll travel together by bus to Kajaani where we will have lunch (provided) before going to CSC where their staff will meet us and take us on a 2-hour tour. A reminder: Biology Thursday seminar continues 2nd Oct, 12:15 on site, room At117, with Dr. Melanie Brien, University of Helsinki, on "Colour and clock genes: Genomic drivers of local adaptation in the wood tiger moth" Colour polymorphisms in natural populations are valuable for studying the evolutionary and genomic mechanisms that maintain genetic diversity. The wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, displays bright hindwing colours associated with unpalatability, and males have discrete colour morphs which vary in frequency across space and time. Some populations are polymorphic, in which we find two colour morphs co-occurring, while other populations remain monomorphic. I will present results from two genomic studies of this system. Firstly, we determined the genetic basis of colour and melanisation in the wings. Secondly, we looked at genetic and phenotypic differences between 7 populations across Europe, covering a latitudinal gradient from Georgia to Northern Finland. We used long-read haplotagging sequencing to study genetic diversity, and detected differences in genes associated with circadian clock rhythms. Together our findings start to uncover how variation has evolved in natural populations and how these moths have adapted to such a wide variety of environments.
