Support for the Research Council of Finland Winter Call The Research Council of Finland's next winter call is open from 15th of October to 12th of November 2025. Research and Project Services will offer support for applicants starting early in the new academic year. Academy Camp for Academy Research Fellow applicants Academy Camp is a series of online events aiming to support Academy Research Fellow applicants starting early September. Online events entail short presentations about the different sections of the application and there is a possibility for peer review. This process will be explained in the first session on 4th of September. Although aimed at Academy Fellowship applicants, it is possible for Academy Project Funding applicants to join in the presentations, if found relevant. Recordings of the Academy Camp sessions will be available to all registered participants on Teams. Sessions will last from one to two hours depending on amount of the topics and if there is discussion. You can still register for the upcoming events. Ventilation off in some parts of labs tomorrow 7-12

Hello everybody, Pictures are a bit difficult to see but there will be ventilation repairs in our laboratories tomorrow 7-12, in Hannele & Marko's end of molecular lab, microbe lab, clean lab, solvent lab, water lab and multipurpose lab. Our offices and fumehoods are not affected, but the ceiling ventilations in these lab rooms will likely not work. Dear colleagues, Biology Thursday seminar will continue 18th Sep, 12:15 on site in room AT117, with Dr. Patrick Nichols, who just started as a post doc at the Ecology and genetics unit here in Oulu, on "Molecules to management: navigating uncertainty in environmental DNA biomonitoring of coral reefs" Abstract: Environmental DNA (eDNA) is transforming how we monitor biodiversity, offering a rapid, non-invasive way to detect species from genetic traces in water, soil, or air. As its use expands across ecosystems and management contexts, there's growing urgency to understand how reliable these tools are, and how to communicate their limitations. This talk explores how uncertainty arises in eDNA data, from natural ecological variability to technical and methodological choices, and what that means for its application in real-world conservation. Using coral reefs, I evaluate how eDNA captures biodiversity patterns over time, how sampling methods influence detection of elusive species, and how sensitive eDNA is to early signs of invasive organisms. To bridge the gap between detection and decision-making, I apply statistical models that estimate error rates and help translate molecular signals into actionable insights. Ultimately, this work underscores the importance of pairing innovation with transparency, helping managers use eDNA effectively while navigating its uncertainties.
