PhD level course on Emerging Contaminants in Urban Waters: Sampling, Analysis, Data Treatment Interpretation and Environmental Protection Solutions

Dear All, We are pleased to announce that the Water Energy and Environmental Engineering research unit is organizing a PhD level course on Emerging Contaminants in Urban Waters: Sampling, Analysis, Data Treatment Interpretation and Environmental Protection Solutions (5ECTs). The course will provide an in-depth description of contaminants of emerging concern and their properties aiming at increasing the attendant's ability to understand their behaviour in the natural environment in addition to recognizing the importance of different sources. Furthermore, the course will provide concrete tools, skills, and competencies to be used in the elaboration of monitoring programs, selection of analytical methods and sampling techniques, detection data interpretation and finally on contaminant reduction technologies both active and nature-based solutions. Detailed description of the course objectives, teaching methods and schedule can be found in the document attached. The course will consist of 3 Modules with an active lecture module scheduled for the 10th to 12th of December 2024 (09:00-16:00). Specialists from different topics from Finland and abroad will provide the lectures. Focus will be placed on students attending the course in person (max 20) although the opportunity will also be given for students (max 10) to follow the course online. Hello everyone, Is anyone in the mailing lists who would be interested in sharing costs to acquire an Agilent 8860 Gas Chromatograph (GC) for EcoGen with FID and TCD detectors (in series)? Clean room PCR racks missing

Hi I noticed that there is no PCR racks (see the image below) in the clean room B162. If you have taken racks from the clean room please return them! Nothing should be taken (including borrowing) from the clean room, the stuff in there is only intended for clean room usage. Also, our group had many PCR racks in the Molecular Biology labs but a lot of them have disappeared, so please note that the racks are group/room specific and they cannot be just taken from anywhere. Yearly lab cleanup date

Hello Everybody, Here is the long promised calendar voting link for the yearly lab cleanup, which will be arranged on the last two weeks of September: https://webapp.oulu.fi/framadate/studs.php?poll=dzJVegtsQJ23KIzT I will close this vote in 7 days on 13th of September, which is next weeks Wednesday. This year we will focus on Molecular Labs, Cardboard Box Storage (which is the second floor storage near microbe laboratory) and Multipurpose laboratory (where I sit nowadays). We will be printing a blueprint of the molecular labs where every user can reserve the table space of molecular lab corridors/slots for your group a few weeks at a time. This way we can maximize the use of table space which has been running low. We are also asking for every group who works in the molecular labs to join the cleanup day, because we have to clear the cabins and shelves of long term storage items and move those to the cardboard box storage, or the more often used things to the storage next to deep freezer room. We are also hoping to transfer all the empty pipette tip boxes to cardboard box storage, since they need to be refilled in order to be valuable in the laboratory. We also encourage everybody to go through the Cardboard Box Storage and renew the names and dates on the boxes. If the date is older than 2 years, the boxes will be evaluated by our lab people, taken to common use (which might mean keeping them in storage for future) or discarded if there is nothing valuable there. Currently there are quite many boxes labelled to year 2021 so after the turn of year 2024 they will be evaluated. We will also be cleaning the Multipurpose laboratory. We will be placing all the unmarked stuff that is stored here also in cardboard boxes and transfer them into the cardboard box storage. The boxes will be labelled Multipurpose Lab and the labels will not be renewed in the coming years, so if you have a feeling your stuff is here, please join the laboratory cleaning day.
