Dear colleagues, A reminder about today's Biology Thursday seminar: 10th Oct 12:15 in zoom (link below), with Prof. Frédéric Guillaume, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Programme, Univ. Helsinki, on: Gene expression evolution during adaptation to heat and drought stress in Tribolium castaneum Understanding the genetic basis of trait variation and adaptation is central to evolutionary biology. In my talk, I will present the results of an experimental evolution experiment with the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, in which we adapted replicated lines of the beetle to heat and drought stress. We studied the evolutionary changes in individual fitness, gene expression and allele frequencies with control crosses in transplant experiments after 20 generations of adaptation. Thanks to estimates of genetic variance and covariance of fitness and gene expression, we could show that gene expression evolved as predicted from estimates of genetic selection. Our approach allows us to better understand the genetics of adaptation by linking evolutionary changes in allele frequencies and gene expression with selection intensities and gene properties such as centrality in co-expression networks and pleiotropy. Overall, we found that genes with central positions in co-expression networks were under stronger selection, evolved more and where more likely to carry expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL). Hei, Seuraava Biologian tutkinto-ohjelman kahvitilaisuus järjestetään tiistaina 29.10. klo 13:15-15 Telluksen Backstagella. Tilaisuus on tarkoitettu kaikille Biologian opiskelijoille sekä Ekologian ja genetiikan tutkimusyksikön henkilökunnalle. Tilaisuuteen ei tarvitse ilmoittautua etukäteen. Varasin kahveille nyt kaksi tuntia, joten jos et pääse heti alussa paikalle, se ei haittaa. Agendassa meillä on miettiä ensin ryhmissä ja sitten yhdessä, miten saamme tehtyä näistä kahvittelutilaisuuksista enemmän yhteisöllisiä. Tervetuloa mukaan ideoimaan! Hi all, As we shortly talked on a last unit meeting, it would be good to have a file where we have a list of field (or other) equipment in our unit, so that we can better plan e.g. new courses and projects, and also support each other. The list is here: S:\Biologia\Yhteiset\Equipment_unit.xlsx Please, fill it in 🙂 The structure of the file is simple: equipment, quantity, and contact person. Note that listing the equipment does not mean it automatically becomes available for others to use (unless it is our unit's).
